Carman falls just short

Taieri bowler Helen Carman has fallen just short of a world title.

She and Englishman Nick Brett were beaten by English duo Robert Paxton and Ellen Falkner in a tiebreak in the final of the mixed pairs at the world indoor championships in Norfolk.

A strong start left Carman and Brett in a good position and they claimed the first game 15-1.

However, Paxton and Falkner fought back to win the second 10-3.

As the matches at the tournament are two games of nine ends, that forced a best-of-three playoff.

Paxton and Falkner won that 2-0.

Carman was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the women's singles draw.

Playing against world No3 Alison Merrien, she got offf to a strong start in both sets, but was beaten 10-5, 12-4.

In the women's pairs she teamed with Brighton's Mario Sopp, but the duo were unable to advance past section play.
