Two Dunedin school curling teams swept their way to silver at a recent national tournament.

The Otago Boys' High School team and the Otago Girls' High"Icicles'' came second in their grades at the New Zealand Secondary School Curling Championship in Naseby last month. Maniototo Area School teams won the finals.

Icicles skip Nika Wood said she was happy with silver.

"Maniototo is a hard team to beat and we knew it would be a challenge. We expected to get a top placing but we did not know what it would be.''

Wood (17) said she enjoyed the tournament. "It was amazing. It was interesting learning all the new etiquette rules.''

Otago Boys' High School skip Hamish Walker said his team was aiming for gold but was happy with the silver.

Walker (17) competed in the tournament two years ago and said it was"really good'' this year.

New Zealand Curling chairman Sam Inder said the teams competed well and the tournament was a"great success''.

"We are very happy with the way it went. We had hoped there would be more teams but Auckland schools found it was very expensive.''

Six boys' teams and five girls' team competed in the three-day tournament, which was held in Naseby for the first time.

The tournament is usually held at the Dunedin Ice Stadium but clashed with an ice hockey tournament.
