Wanaka multisport athlete Braden Currie has made an impressive start to 2017.

Currie claimed victory in the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman in Mount Maunganui, smashing the course record by more than two minutes in the process.

He completed the course in 3hr 45min 38sec, beating the previous record of 3:47.54 jointly held by Nathan Richmond and Graham O'Grady.

``I still can't quite believe I went as fast as I did,'' Currie (30) said.

``This is my fourth time racing this event and although I have won it twice before, I had to dig pretty deep to achieve the time I set this year.''

After a strong 2km swim, Currie set up his win on the 90km cycle section, pulling away from second-placed Cameron Brown. He then ran his fastest half-marathon ever to blitz the run in 1hr 13min 55sec. Brown, a 10-time winner of the event, eventually finished two minutes behind Currie, and 19-year-old Hayden Wilde came in third.

``Everything went well. I was second out of the water and felt great on the bike. There was one guy ahead of me but I just raced my own race and managed to extend the lead on the chase pack and come off the bike first.

``I definitely put a huge focus into extended training blocks last year, but hadn't felt the results of this in my last few races of 2016. It is starting to feel like all those miles are paying dividends now.''

It was the latest in a run of good form for Currie, who was coming off a win in the Ironman Taupo 70.3 at the end of last year.

He is set to race in Wanaka's Red Bull Defiance on January 21 and 22. There he will team up with international Xterra rival United States-based Josiah Middaugh. He will then have his eyes on a fourth Coast to Coast title on February 11. He said he would also consider racing the Taupo Ironman in March, although would see how things went.
