It's new track will be officially opened next month but the Dunedin BMX club is already enjoying its benefits.

The club has been awarded the 2019 South Island championships which will attract from 250 to 350 racers, as well as their families and supporters, from all over New Zealand to Dunedin.

The championships are allocated by BMXNZ and will be raced in January in 2019.

It follows on from the Alexandra club hosting the same event two years ago.

The Dunedin club has been busy over the past year renovating its track at Forrester Park, getting it up to national standards.

It is set to be officially opened next month. An open day and first major race are planned for the new track on February 12.

All the best riders and racers from the lower South Island and Canterbury region should be in action as they chase qualifying points for the BMX national championships in Easter.

Riders have just returned from the 2017 South Island championships in Christchurch and there were some great results for both Dunedin and Alexandra BMX clubs.

Alexandra had 19 top-eight finishers, nine of them on the podium, while Dunedin had 15 top-eight finishers and seven podium finishes.

Standouts for Dunedin were Tamryn Hurren-Webster who claimed both titles in the 30-plus women's 20-inch and 30-plus cruiser. Terry Finnerty won the 50-plus cruiser and 40-plus 20-inch.

Riding for the Alexandra club, Tahlia Nelson raced well all weekend to take first place in the 10 girls and Holly Oldham improved with every race, even after a crash, to challenge for first place. However, she ended with a solid second place in the 14 girls.
