Queenstown's Chris Forne has claimed a fifth consecutive world title.

The 41-year-old notched that mark at the world adventure racing championship in Reunion, as Team Avaya romped home to yet another win.

It was the team's sixth title as it had won in 2012 as well - and Forne's seventh.

Made up of Forne and fellow New Zealanders Nathan Fa'avae, Stu Lynch and Fleur Pawsey, the team has proved a near-unbeatable force.

It completed the 10-leg, 460km course in a time of 117hr 01min, three hours ahead of Swedish team Haglofs Silva in second.

"It wasn't until we were on the final bike ride and going well that we thought we would win. Until then we still expected someone to come up behind us," Forne was quoted as saying on the championships website.

"I had a difficult start to the race suffering in the heat.

"Those two days of trekking in hot conditions were tough but it never got out of control and we kept moving.

"Still it left me feeling a bit beaten up for the whole race."

The race involved a variety of disciplines including pack-rafting, mountain biking, abseiling, trekking and ocean kayaking.

Included in the course was an ascent of the 3071m Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise volcano.
