Four Dunedin skaters are set to represent New Zealand on the ice in Melbourne in May.

Lucienne Holtz (14), Masaki Joe (13), Rebekah Sime (12) and Brooke Cathro (10) were selected for the ISU Oceania Novice Competition.

Aimed at novice level skaters, the event looks to develop regional talent by exposing younger athletes to higher levels of competition.

The level refers to international standards, the two higher being junior and senior - senior is Olympic level.

This competition acts as a stepping stone to those higher levels.

Dunedin's Fanis Shakirzianau will travel as the team coach, while Nicki Holtz is the assistant team leader.

The group leaves on May 12 and 13, the competition running from May 15-19.

Previous competitions have attracted skaters from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, as well as New Zealand and Australia.
