Two young Dunedin divers were to the fore as part of a small New Zealand team which competed in Singapore earlier this month.

Diving New Zealand sent a team of five to the 10th Singapore National Diving Championships.

Dunedin divers Theo Smith (14) and Sophie Derbyshire (12) have been training at Moana Pool for four to five years with Diving Otakou.

Sophie made a great start to the event by winning the platform event, while Theo finished third in the 1m open men's event.

He also placed third in the B group platform event.

All five squad members entered in the boys and girls 14-18 synchro event.

Theo, a year 10 pupil at Otago Boys' High School, and his partner gained a silver medal and Sophie and her partner, Alicia Lim, of Singapore, picked up gold.

The last event of the day was the Group C girls' 1m - a very close competition in which Sophie placed second.

On the last day of the championships, Theo placed fourth in the 3m event.

In the final event for the squad, Sophie, a year eight pupil at Columba College, won gold with an outstanding performance on the 3m.

The pair's next competition is Diving Otakou's South Island competition at Moana Pool on August 3-4.
