Anna Grimaldi remains in the dark as to her injury status, but that is not stopping her showing the light to the next wave of Paralympians.

The para-athlete is one of several stars who will be at today’s Paralympic Open Day at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

The gold medallist from the T47 long jump in Rio said the event, offering a chance to give para-sport a go, was similar to the one that got her into the sport.

It was a great way to remain involved for the 21-year-old, who has been nursing a stress fracture in her foot for nine months.

She had been keeping as active as possible, doing gym work and drills with coach Brent Ward.

While it was feeling good, she has yet to jump or run at full pace and is unsure how it is  truly progressing.

A scan on April 20 will provide more answers, but until then it is a case of thinking positively and not rushing her recovery.

"I’m taking it really slowly, which is frustrating, but it’s the only way there is really, I think," she said.

"You’ve got to take it slow and make sure you’re doing it right to make sure you don’t have a setback or anything."

She first had problems with her left foot in January last year and the injury reached crisis point at July’s world championships in London.

She had to pull out of the 100m and 200m, barely being able to walk after her 200m heat.

She battled through the pain to finish fourth in the long jump, just 6cm behind first place.

"It’s definitely not like it was at world champs, in terms of pain or weakness, so that is positive at the moment.

"But I guess I still don’t know what’s going on inside there yet, so hopefully it is OK."

Grimaldi said there was no timeline for when she could return.

That made things tough, although it had been lucky to have happened in a year in which she did not have a major event to build for.

While she was missing competing, it had also been nice to have a break after three hectic years.

She said the injury might be one she would never fully recover from, as studies showed similar injuries lingering years later.

That was not stopping her aiming to return though and the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics are  her long-term goal.

Grimaldi  is set to be joined by Adam Hall, Carl Murphy, Jessica Hamill, Caitlin Dore and Jacob Phillips at the Paralympic Open Day today, from 10am to 3pm.

The event will include a range of sports and is free to attend.
