Netball

St Kevin’s A made a strong run in the third quarter in a tight game to beat Maheno 31-25.

With St Kevin’s holding with a six-goal margin, Maheno could not cut back the deficit.

St Kevin’s played a very tight short game and made its goals count. Ellen Swanson (C) really stepped up to premier netball with a constructive match.

Maheno had lots of chances but struggled to get the ball to its shoots. Becky Patterson (WA) produced a faultless game in her premier debut. Quarter scores were 9-6, 16-13, 26-18 and 31-25.

Waitaki Girls’ Lightning Strike and Waitaki Girls’ Wildfire played their premier netball game on Wednesday, as the Waitaki formal took priority later  in the week.

For the record, Lightning Strike took the honours, leading all the way: 8-7 in the first quarter, 21-13 at halftime and 28-20 at three-quarter time, and finishing with 37-30.

Losa Fifita, a year 10 pupil, produced an outstanding game at goal shoot for the winner.

Valley Gold was too strong for its sister club Valley Silver, taking a 16-4 lead in the first quarter and extending it  to 24-6 by halftime.

Valley Gold continued its domination with 34-11 at three-quarter time and marched on to a 49-17 win.

Rugby

Old Boys maintained its unbeaten run when it repelled a strong second-half challenge from Athletic Marist to win 42-12.

Old Boys dominated the first half, running in four tries, all of which were converted by halfback Inoke Naufahu. Old Boys captain Ralph Darling opened Old Boys’ account four minutes into the game when, from a 5m lineout, he touched down from the resulting maul for Naufahu to convert.

Other tries in the opening half were scored by flanker Anthony Amato, who got two, while  flanker Filipo Veamatahau took a clean take from a lineout to dive over.

Athletic Marist got on the board four minutes into the second half when No8 Junior Fakatoufifita scrambled over from broken play and first five-eighth Mason Kinzett converted. Athletic Marist continued to take the game to Old Boys and lock Siosuia Fifita scored.

The final eight minutes of the game belonged to Old Boys’ Naufahu.

The slippery halfback caught the opposition unawares when he took a tap penalty to score and convert.

Late in the game, Naufahu speculated a loose ball from 40m out and won the race to the ball, to score.

Football

Meadowbank travelled to Geraldine for the South Canterbury league on Saturday and came home with mixed results. In the First XI game, Geraldine led Meadowbank  3-2 at halftime with first-half goals to Andy Lane and Sullivan Martin,  but in the second half, Geraldine added three unanswered goals for a 6-3 victory.

Indoor bowls

In the qualifying round of the New Zealand Mixed Fours,  the composite team of Gordon Robb (s), Lynne Porter, Andy Blakeley and Aylene Millar beat an Oamaru club team of Mike Howard (s), Sue Jones, Graham Larcombe and Rhonda Lockerbie 10-7 in the final. The triples tournament on Friday night was won by Chris Poole, Noel Read and Raewyn de Filippi (Meadowbank), who beat Rhonda Lockerbie, Graham Larcombe and Aylene Millar 4-3. Gordon Robb and Alwyn McLay took the Yankee bowls from Rhonda Lockerbie, Joy Gibson and Ian Gibson.
