Otago pair nominated for Halbergs

Two Otago athletes are  among the final Halberg Award nominees announced yesterday.

Para-javelin  thrower Holly Robinson and freeskier Nico Porteous are both nominated for awards.

Robinson, a silver medallist at last year’s para-athletics world championships, was nominated for the disabled sportsperson of the year award.

Porteous, set to become New Zealand’s youngest Winter Olympian, is up for the emerging talent award.

Both face tough competition.

Robinson is nominated alongside swimmer Sophie Pascoe, alpine skier Corey Peters and fellow athlete William Stedman.

Porteous will be challenged by cyclist Ellesse Andrews, yachtsman Josh Armit and rower Matthew MacDonald.

Former Highlanders coach Glenn Moore is nominated for coach of the year after winning the Women’s Rugby World Cup with the Black Ferns.

Rowing’s Gary Hay, canoe racing’s Gordon Walker and softball’s Mark Sorenson are also nominated.

In the sportsman of the year category, Beauden Barrett, Brendon Hartley, Ross Taylor and Tom Walsh received nominations.

Up for the sportswoman of the year award are Lisa Carrington, Lydia Ko, Portia Woodman and Sarah Goss.

The Black Ferns (rugby), Black Sox (softball), Team New Zealand (yachting) and women’s K2 duo Lisa Carrington and Caitlin Ryan (canoe racing) will contest team of the year.

The awards will be held on February 8 in Auckland.
