The Borton Cup senior cricket final turned into an anticlimax when top qualifier Valley was beaten by seven wickets by defending champion Union on Saturday.

Valley's Hamish McKenzie won the toss, elected to bat and the side started solidly at 26 without loss after nine overs.

But then it lost three wickets in just two overs to slump to 41 for three after 15 overs, with Glynn Cameron claiming two wickets in his first over to have figures of two for three.

Valley slumped to 68 for nine after 29 overs and lost its final wicket at 91 in the 35th over.

Cameron finished four for 14 off 10 overs while Union captain Paul Johnston took three for 27 and Phil Crossan two for 22.

Union started well at 20 without loss after five overs, but then lost Antony Cromwell (13), Jeremiah Shields (7) and Thomas Shields (0) to fall to 32 for three after 10.

Cameron and Duncan Drew came together to produce an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 68 to see Union through to 92 for three in the 25th.

Dave Simpson took two for 31 for Valley.

Meanwhile, Sean Eathorne and Ben Cant shared the Oamaru Licensing Trust trophy for the representative cricketer of the year presented on Saturday night.

David Sewell was named the best representative performer on and off the field.

Paul O'Dell took the fielding award, and Duncan Drew and Darren Broom were honoured for outstanding representative performances with the N. D. Ireland trophy.

In senior club cricket, Albion's Brad Kernahan took the all-rounder of the year award and batsman of the year, scoring 638 runs and taking 32 wickets.

The award for senior bowling went to Valley's Hamish McKenzie, who took 39 wickets.

Bowls

Kerry Kelly and Brenda Direen claimed the bar to their gold stars when the Phoenix pair took the women's champion of champions pairs played at the Kurow club and set Phoenix on the way to a clean sweep, with Brenda Hope taking the champion of champions singles, Kerry Kelly, Brenda Direen and Gail Douglas taking the triples and the champion of champions fours for play at Awamoa club today and tomorrow.

Kelly and Direen had a bye in the first round and beat Kathy Wright, of Hampden, 28-10 in the semifinal.

In the final against Mary Watson and Lanah Craik, of Meadowbank, Phoenix led 4-3 after five ends and in a close contest Meadowbank got back to draw level at 12 all after 12 ends.

Phoenix led by two shots after 17 of the 21 ends and extended this to 15-12 with two remaining, Kelly and Direen holding on for their 17-13 win. The North Otago Women's Development team finished second in the Lex Kimber trophy tournament in Timaru recently, behind South Canterbury.

Singles player for North Otago, Lanah Craik, won all of her three singles matches, while the pair of Mary Watson and Craik won two of their three games.

Phoenix's Mike Gorman and Mike Aspros took the veterans champion of champions pairs at the Maheno club, with an 18-11 win over Kurow's Norm Cochrane and Ray Luke.

Gorman and Aspros beat Allan Deuchrass, of Hampden, in the first round and in the semifinals downed Barney Patton, of Awamoa, 18-8.

The final saw the teams tied at four-all after five ends and six-all at nine ends.

Kurow then went out to lead 9-6 after 11.

Phoenix then hit a purple patch and on the next three ends picked up nine shots to go out to 15-9.

A three on the 16th end took Phoenix out to 18-10 and after a single on the 17th end Kurow conceded.

Sonny Brown won his eighth Centre title when he guided his Awamoa team of Bob Mason and Des Bartlett to a 19-12 win over Phoenix's Trevor Wilson, Geoff Devlin and Ken White in the final of the champion of champions triples played at the RSA club on Saturday.

Brown progressed to the final with wins over RSA's Jim Nimmo, 24-13, and Graham Robins, of Pukeuri, 24-12, while Wilson beat Maheno's Hugh Catto 21-10 and Hampden's Allan Deuchrass 29-6.

In the final, Wilson took a single on the first end, but Brown won the next six ends to lead 8-1 after seven.

Wilson hit form and fought back with nine shots on the next four ends to regain the lead 10-9.

Brown made the break in the 15th end with a two, a one and a two, to lead 16-11.

Wilson claimed a single on the 19th end, but Brown wrapped it up with a two and a single on the last two ends.

Central Otago

The Wanaka Bowling Club hosted its annual District Club Fours during the weekend where the Arrowtown Hotel team of Graham and Jenni Heazelwood, John Lindsay and Heather Cotton were victors.

Stuart and Rhonda Hurley and George and Betty Russell playing for the Wanaka Hotel were second while Ale House Wanaka featuring Brett Simpson, John Barrow, Noeline Turner and Margaret Barrow was third.

In the Maniototo, Peter Williams, of Waipiata, was the big winner in the final round of pennants for the season, beating Ranfurly's Jim Walker 21-8.

The Naseby pairing of Bill Morice and Brian Hollebon played out a 19-all draw in their match, while Patearoa's Sam McSkimming only just held off a strong challenge from Naseby's Trevor Lowien 18-17.

Waipata C was the Maniototo Sub-centre pennants champion for 2009-10, winning the Fowler Cup.

South Otago
By NORMAN WOODSAs the men's interclub bowls competition reached the penultimate round of the season, Kaka Point came back to form with an 8-4 win over Milton Blue.

Ray Hopkins (2), John Hurst and John Bisset had wins, while the best for Milton Blue came from Sandy McNoe and Peter Mathieson.

Stirling beat Clinton by 8-4. R. Mills scored two wins with John Sutherland and Joe Nicol achieving one win each.

For Clinton, Les McKenzie and Doug Sinclair recorded single wins.

Town and Country drew 6-all in its games against Clutha Valley.

For T and C, Jim Savage recorded two wins and was most impressive.

The other win went to Barrie Keach.

Crawford, Ken Rishworth and Tony Cook scored single wins.

The men's midweek competition has one round to go, and Town and Country leads the competition by three points from Owaka.

T and C cannot be beaten as it has such a lead it cannot lose.

Despite losing to Finegand by 25-7, T and C has been outstanding this season, winning 14 of its 19 games.

In other games, Owaka scored a 27-13 win over Clinton to retain second placing.

In the bottom-of-the-table clash, Balclutha Red upset Kaka Point Seals by 24-15.
