Queenstown skier Alice Robinson will not be able to compete at the FIS world cup finals in Italy next month.

Robinson, who finished a surprise second in the giant slalom finals last year, will have to miss the championships as they have been cxancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The championships were due to take place in Cortina in northern Italy on March 16-22 but, with Italy in virtual lockdown because of the virus, the championships have been cancelled.

Robinson is due to race in the world cup giant slalom in Sweden this weekend.

She finished fourth in the super G at the junior world ski championships in Narvik in Norway this week.

Robinson had a strong run and was ahead at the first split but a small mistake midway down the course cost her precious time and she crossed the finish line in third place before dropping to fourth by the end of the race.

Austrian skiers Magdalena Egger and Lisa Grill took gold and silver, replicating their results in the previous day's downhill. French skier Karen Clement finished third.

Meanwhile, Wanaka free ride skier Craig Murray has won the Freeride world tour event in Austria.

Murray took the win with Wanaka’s’ Hank Bilous is third place and Blake Marshall, of Queenstown, in fourth.

With the win, Murray qualified for the world tour final along with Bilous and Marshall.

The final is in Verbier in Switzerland.
