Junior surf life-savers sprint to the water during the start of their paddle-board race at Tomahawk Beach, Dunedin, yesterday morning.

The competitors were among 90 junior surf life-savers from the St Clair, St Kilda, Warrington and Brighton clubs to take part in junior and senior competitions at the beach yesterday.

This was the first combined junior and senior event attended by the Dunedin clubs for the season.

It was also the first time surf life-saving clubs had competed at the beach in several years, due to improved water quality after the completion of the city’s 1.1km sewage outfall pipe, on the south side of Lawyers Head.

Otago-Southland club support officer for Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Sam Clutterbuck, said the event went well, in good conditions, with 40 senior surf life savers, the latter aged 14 and older, also competing at the same event as the juniors, aged 13 and younger.

It was "positive" that the improved water quality meant Tomahawk Beach was becoming more popular with swimmers and surfers, and serious consideration was being given to possibly providing more safety support there through voluntary patrols, in future, he said.
