Surfing to victory

South Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club pair Steven Drabble (front) and Zac Quickenden ride a wave to shore to win the annual White Island Race held at St Clair Beach on Saturday.

The event, which has been run  since 1969, attracted 63 competitors across five  categories.

Gabrielle Trotter, of Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club, was the first swimmer out of the water, while St Clair Surf Lifesaving Club’s Ryan Shanks won the single surf ski category.

Papamoa’s Ben Johnston was the quickest on the board and the South Brighton crew won the canoe race.

St Clair’s Lucy Matehaere won the handicapped event.
