Swimming: Dunedin's Crosland grabs three medals

New Zealand swimmers added three medals to finish with 15 overall at the conclusion of the Oceania championships at New Caledonia last night.

Queensland-based sprinter Cameron Simpson won a silver medal in the final of the 50m freestyle, while Carsten Corassa earned a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley and the men won silver in the medley relay.

Simpson, from the Templeton club in Christchurch, clocked a slick 23.18s to finish behind Australian Kyle Richardson who won in 22.83 to establish a new Oceania championship record.

Corassa, who won the 400m individual medley, had to settle for bronze in the 200m medley behind Australians Kenneth To and Daniel Lester, with the winner home in a championship record of 2:05.25.

The most successful New Zealand swimmers at the meet were Dunedin's Kurt Crosland and Masterton's Isaac Foote, who both finished with three medals.

Crosland, at 27 the senior citizen of the team, won the 100m backstroke and claimed silver medals in the 50m and 200m backstroke in a busy meet where he qualified for six finals.

Foote claimed bronze medals in the 400m and 1500m freestyle and 10km open water swim.
