It was a case of so close, yet so far, for Dunedin swimmer Andrew Trembath (18) in Hawaii yesterday.
He missed out on a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships by 0.4sec.
Trembath, who represents the Neptune club, completed the race in 56.48sec, less than two seconds behind the winner, American Connor Green.
Earlier, the Dunedin teenager finished his heat in fourth place to qualify for the final, and was the most successful New Zealand swimmer on the opening day of competition.
Other New Zealand finalists were Waikato's Bradlee Ashby (18) and Ashburton's Grace Sommerville.
Ashby finished fifth in the 200m butterfly after touching the wall in second place after 50m, while Sommerville finished seventh in the women's 200m butterfly.
