Table tennis: Wang, Duffy favoured in open

The province's finest players will converge on the Bayfield High School gymnasium today for the Otago Open.

Former Fijian representative Wang Qi is favoured to battle Ben Duffy for the men's title, while Debbie Garrett looms as a likely winner in the women's draw.

About 50 players have been confirmed for the event, which has shifted from its usual venue, the Edgar Centre.

Just two of those competitors are aged between 19-30, while there are 12 men entered in the over-50 age group.

The competitor's ages did not come as a shock to event manager Barry Ellis.

Men in their 20s tended to be consumed by "women, cars, kids and everything else", before returning to the sport later on, he said.

One player is travelling from Christchurch for the tournament, with the majority coming from Otago and Southland.

There are 18 players entered in the men's draw which Ellis describes as a "good number".

The Otago Table Tennis Association is hosting the event from 9am, with the finals expected to begin between 4pm and 5pm.
