Several of Otago's best snowsports athletes will compete against a strong international field in an event at Cardrona Alpine Resort next week.

The Cardrona Games from September 12-16 will feature two freeski and snowboard slopestyle competitions, as well as freeski and snowboard halfpipe competitions.

Freestyle skier Finn Bilous, of Wanaka, is looking forward to competing at home against high-level talent.

''I'm really excited to have the opportunity to compete against some of the world's best skiers on the mountain I learnt to ski at,'' the double Youth Olympic medallist said.

''The facilities at Cardrona are unreal, so I think it's going to be a great show.''

He will be joined by his Youth Olympics team-mates, freeskier Jackson Wells, also of Wanaka, and snowboarder Tiarn Collins, of Queenstown.

Queenstown skiers Adie Lawrence and Margaux Hackett will compete in the women's section.

Competitors will be able to earn International Ski Federation points which can be used to help qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchange, South Korea. They will compete for a share of the $27,000 prizemoney.

The prospect of earning these points should lure some of the world's top and up-and-coming talent. The event will act as a warm-up for later in the season, when the bulk of the events take place in the northern hemisphere.

The event is being run in lieu of another big event on the New Zealand snowsports calender.

''It's a joint venture between Snowsports New Zealand, Cardrona and Winter Games,'' Snow Sports New Zealand marketing and communications manager Alex Kerr said.

''Because there's not an actual Winter Games this year they're helping to run the event, but they're not flying the Winter Games banner.

''It's kind of a low-key event in the interim.''

The games will be jointly sanctioned by many of the world's leading skiing and snowboarding bodies.
