A tribute will be held for former Otago Daily Times sports reporter Alistair McMurran tomorrow at the Edgar Centre.

McMurran died last week while out on a walk near Mt Cook. He was 80.

A private funeral was held earlier this week and the tribute tomorrow will be a chance for members of the public to acknowledge the contribution McMurran made to sport in Otago and other achievements. The tribute, which is open to the public,  will start at 3pm at the More FM arena.

The event, which will be relatively informal, will be hosted by former runner and broadcaster Paul Allison,  a long-time friend of McMurran.

A former school teacher, McMurran started at the Otago Daily Times in 1975 and retired from fulltime reporting in 2014.

He continued to cover sport for the newspaper after his retirement.

He reported on a variety of sports, although he specialised in club rugby, athletics, swimming and bowls.

McMurran, who was not married, was also a keen traveller who visited about 150 countries, including North Korea.
