Two seconds, two thirds for Otago at national champs

Otago claimed two second and two third placings at the Olympic weightlifting national championships in Auckland at the weekend.

Amanda Gould and Joshua Homersham both finished second in their classes and both broke Otago records in the clean and jerk and total.

Gould snatched 74kg and cleaned and jerked 94kg in the senior women's 63kg class, while Homersham lifted 105kg in the snatch and 131kg in the clean and jerk in the junior men's 85kg class.

Jiro Ishida, who finished fifth in the senior men's 69kg class, managed a 93kg snatch and 109kg clean and jerk to break Otago records in the snatch and total.

Owen Webb, who received the most improved youth male award for all New Zealand competitors, lifted 67kg in the snatch and 85kg in the clean and jerk to finish third in the junior 62kg class.

Marco Mollo also finished third, in the junior 77kg class, with a snatch of 100kg and clean and jerk of 130kg. The lifts enabled Mollo to claim fourth in the senior category as well.

Another Otago lifter, Savannah-Rose Corbett, was named most improved senior female.

In the team competition, the Otago men's junior and senior teams both finished third, while the senior women's team finished fifth.

The event included 136 competitors from around New Zealand, with Otago sending eight. A handful of guest lifters crossed the Tasman from Australia.

Otago Weightlifting will host next year's national championships. It is believed it has not hosted the event for 45 years.

Meanwhile, Shanaya Allan, secretary of Otago Weightlifting, has been elected to the Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand executive group as a South Island delegate.
