Valerie Adams missing from shot put startlist

Defending shot put champion Valerie Adams will - after all - get a chance to add to her Beijing gold medal.

Her name was a glaring omission from the start lists due to what the New Zealand Olympic Committee described as an "administrative error".

"Her name didn't appear on the start list," NZOC spokesperson Ashley Abbott said. "It was an administrative error.

"We have just been in a meeting with the IAAF [world athletics governing body] and they have instated her," Abbott said.

The administrative error looks certain to have come from the New Zealand end, rather than the IAAF or Locog.

"The New Zealand Olympic Team is taking the situation extremely seriously. Right now the team is focused on competition however is committed to finding out exactly what occurred," Abbott said.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
