Brighton triathlete Scott Weatherall conquered the Ironman event on Saturday, although it was a tough battle.

Weatherall was a recipient of the Tony Jackson Scholarship which gave him free entry to this year's race. He was running for the Key to Life Trust and the message of ''I am Hope''.

Weatherall (38) had done a lot of training and was well prepared for the event.

He completed the swim and cycling legs all right but the running leg was tough, and he was forced to walk some of the course.

He ended up recording 1hr 18min 56sec for the swim, 7hr 20min 59sec for the cycle and 5hr 55min 37sec for the run. All up, his time was 14hr 48min 24sec as he finished in darkness.

''The swim felt really good and the bike felt great, but I was disappointed with that second lap on the run when I walked a little earlier than I thought. But I was stoked to be there ... and I pretty much ran that whole last lap. That returned a bit of internal mana to me,'' he said.

''Never at one moment did I consider stepping out of the event. I always knew I would finish - it was just a matter of how.''
