Paddlers in a mixed grade 10km race take to the water on Saturday during the Fire and Ice Outrigger Canoe Club’s annual IceBreaker Waka Ama Regatta.

The regatta, in its 18th year, drew more than 90 paddlers.

Race organiser Vivienne Harvey said while conditions for the 10km race to St Leonards and back on Saturday were "a bit challenging" due to a northeasterly wind, teams still gained good results. Sunday’s conditions were "perfect", she said.

Winners of the men’s 21km open were Team Dogfish, from Christchurch club Te Awa Haku, and winners of the women’s open were the Maroro team from Te Awa Haku, who were preparing for the world sprint championships next month.

Ms Harvey said prizes were given out for the winners and second and third place-getters of every event, and "Paddler of the Regatta" and "Club of the Regatta" prizes were made as well. Club of the Regatta went to Te Waka Pounamu, from Christchurch, while the paddler award went to Fire and Ice club member Steve Paddock.
