Otago teams notched wins but could not catch the front-runners at the South Island softball championships over the weekend.

Otago sides lined up in the men's, women's, and under-17 boys and girls divisions of the tournament held in Christchurch. Two under-17 Central Otago teams also added to the province's presence at the championships.

In the men's Jubilee Cup, Otago notched wins over Southland and Nelson. Its tournament started on Saturday with a 7-0 loss to hot favourite Canterbury. Its day got better when it turned around a recent 10-3 Bates Shield loss to Southland into a 8-5 win.

In the final day-one match, Otago went close to beating Marlborough, losing 6-5.

A 4-0 shut-out of Nelson in the last round robin game was not enough to advance the men's side to the competition final.

The Otago women's team also failed to make the final. The women's division had three provincial entries, meaning Otago played Canterbury and Southland twice in the round robin draw.

Otago's tournament started on a good note with a 5-2 win over Southland. However, the Southlanders hit back twice as the weekend went on, firstly with a 9-3 win in their second round robin game and then 7-5 in a playoff to make the Jubilee Cup final.

In between those matches the Otago women could not foot it with favourite Canterbury, going down 12-1 and 15-0.

Canterbury won the men's and women's finals.

The under-17 Otago teams were well beaten, though there was one individual highlight. Central Otago rep Breigh Monaghan was selected in the girls' tournament team. The infielder will line up for the team known as the Southern Pride at an international series in Brisbane next July. Teammate Jade Miller also made the squad as a non-travelling reserve.
