Butt pacer has hard act to follow

Rocknroll Magic could bolt in at Forbury Park tonight and still go home somewhat of an underachiever.

The Tim Butt-trained pacer looks a big winning hope in race 7 at Forbury Park tonight for driver Kimberly Butt.

However, even if the horse runs away to the easiest of wins in sizzling time, he is not any hope of shining as brightly as his older half-brother Field Marshal did four days ago.

The 5yr-old, who is also out of Mosgiel owners Syd and Shona Brown's former smart racemare, Foreal, beat Australia's best pacers in the group 1 Len Smith Mile at Menangle on Sunday.

The winning feeling his owners got after Field Marshal boomed home from deep on the markers to down Lennytheshark and Hectorjayjay will be almost impossible for Rocknroll Magic to match.

''We were blessed and privileged to have a horse good enough to be in the race, let alone win it.'' Syd Brown said.

''But to win it in the fashion he did against their best horses was really something to treasure.''

The Browns' feelings were much different when their pacer was buried four back on the markers while two of Australia's best horses set the race terms in front.

''I was thinking the best we can do here is fourth.

''I think what really helped us was the tempo of the race. The third quarter was so hard it found a lot of horses out on the point of the bend.''

Once gaps opened in the straight, driver Anthony Butt angled Field Marshal to the outside of the track where he powered home to win in 1.50.2 for the mile at odds of 30-1.

Brown applauded the winning training effort of Tim Butt who advised him yesterday the horse had arrived safely in Brisbane before his tilt at two races at the Queensland winter carnival.

''He will race on the 8th of July in a $A50,000 ($NZ52,000) free-for-all and on the 15th of July in the Blacks A Fake and that's for $A200,000.''

The Browns have Foreal permanently homed at Nevele R Stud in Canterbury, where the 15yr-old broodmare is in good order and in foal to rookie sire Captaintreacherous.

''I have two full brothers to Field Marshal at home. One is rising 2 and the other one is a weanling.''

The Browns also have a 2yr-old Bettor's Delight filly named Prego who has just returned to work at Butt's stable.

Rocknroll Magic will go in the opposite direction after tonight's race. He will head to the spelling paddock rather than returning to Butt's stable.
