Bad weather has forced the postponement of tomorrow's trots at Waikouaiti.

The Waikouaiti racecourse, which was scheduled to hold races tomorrow and on Saturday, has been affected by flooding after recent heavy rain.

The Racing Integrity Unit (RIU) and Waikouaiti Trotting Club Officials met early this afternoon to inspect the track.

The decision to call off tomorrow's 12 race card was a 'no-brainer' stipendiary steward Mark Davidson said.

Surface water lay across large parts of the track, making racing there impossible.

Waikouaiti's two day meeting will now be run on Saturday and Monday, Harness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ) racing manager Darrin Williams said.

Transferring the meeting to Oamaru or Forbury Park was an option that was considered but it was decided that the two race days will remain at Waikouaiti.

Local officials and the RIU representatives were confident that the surface water that is affecting the track could drain by Saturday, Williams said.

The Waikouaiti track will be inspected on Friday morning to assess its suitability for Saturday's meeting.

Should the track be unsuitable then both race days would be abandoned, Williams said.

The Waikouaiti racecourse only has three race meetings each year with an annual thoroughbred race day and an annual two-day harness meeting.

In January, the Waikouaiti gallops were called off after just one race after the track was deemed unsafe for racing.

The postponement of tomorrow's trotting meeting is unrelated to the issue that caused the abandonment, Williams said.
