Double Rainbow delivers pot of gold

Forbury Park trainer Graeme Anderson has kept up his good strike rate as an amateur driver, winning with Double Rainbow at Oamaru yesterday.

Anderson barely had to move a muscle in the cart as the pacer, trained by Kirstin Barclay and Paul Ellis, cruised to victory by more than three lengths in yesterday's opener.

Anderson used Double Rainbow's good gate-speed to lead and control the tempo of the 2000m event.

That was in stark contrast to the run the pair put in on the first day of the two-day Waikouaiti meeting at Oamaru.

The pacer botched the start of the amateur event at the track on Sunday, before staging a huge finish to run second.

The pacer had no such troubles yesterday and handed Anderson his first driving win of the season.

The horseman, who is known more as a strike rate trainer than a driver, kept up his good record as an amateur reinsman in the process.

The victory was his sixth from just 24 career starts.

Canterbury reinsman John Morrison was the star of the professional ranks at yesterday's meeting.

Morrison scored victories with Melt Down and Franco June, who both won at good odds.

Morrison gave Melt Down a perfect run in the trail before peeling the pacer out for her winning finish in the straight.

The 4yr-old was having her ninth start for Methven trainer Michael Heenan.

Morrison took a more aggressive approach with Franco June, but the result was the same.

He launched the Robert Wilson trained pacer from three back in the running line to issue a challenge to the leaders from the 600m.

Franco June sustained that run to hold out runner-up, Lilac Star, by three-quarters of a length at the finish.
