Drop in class should make Fire Lily very difficult to hold out

Canterbury mare Fire Lily looks well placed for a deserved win at Wingatui today.

The Lance Robinson-trained mare meets an even field in today's opener over 1600m.

She will not meet the strength of field she has been racing in at recent feature race meetings in Canterbury, which should make her very hard to hold out.

''It is a big drop back in class tomorrow. That should be a big help to her,'' Robinson said.

''She has always raced in really strong class at Riccarton.''

Fire Lily was just over two lengths behind progressive winner Bully Boy in her most recent outing at Riccarton, earlier this month.

The horse has progressed well since that race in which she hit the line with purpose.

''She has come through the run really well and we are really happy with her.''

Absolute Gold, who produced a good third placing in his first run of the spring for trainer Claire Anderton, looks Fire Lily's main rival.

The horse has an excellent record of three starts for a win and a placing on his home track.

Today's feature sprint race is a case of the heavyweight versus the featherweight.

Topweight Somethings Burning will lug 59kg with apprentice Julia Anderson claiming 4kg on the nine-win sprinter.

Main rival Kiwi Ida will carry just 50.5kg with Rahul Beeharry claiming 4kg. The mare returned with a handy fourth placing in her first run of the spring at Timaru earlier this month.

Stablemate Pippi Rea is another leading chance in the race for trainers John and Karen Parsons.
