The foal is one of three Pure Champion foals to have arrived at the stud south of Waimate in the past few weeks, co-principal Jimmy Cooney said.

The first, a colt out of Pins mare Spin A Fortune, arrived on September 11, the filly above (out of Coats Choice mare Katerox) was born last Wednesday and a colt out of Red Opal was born on Sunday.

''They're all nice types like him,'' Cooney said.

Pure Champion, a black-type winner in Europe, Asia and New Zealand, served 36 mares last year, so Cooney expects 25 or 26 foals to be produced this breeding season. He did not arrive at the stud until late August last year.

''We're hoping for a bit more patronage this year because he was so late [arriving] last year. There should be a good book.''
