The plan for Go Davey was to win a country cup and it all  came to fruition when he won the Kurow Cup at Oamaru yesterday.

Under a great drive from Ricky May, Go Davey  held on from the fast-finishing Forgotten Highway in the feature pacing race at the Kurow Harness Racing Club’s meeting. The speed was on early  which  meant back-markers Dom Domingo and Forgotten Highway had a lot  of work to do.  It was  too much for Dom Domingo, who never got into contention. But Forgotten Highway launched an audacious bid from out wide and all but caught Go Davey.

The result would have been reversed if the distance  required  a further stride but May timed his run to perfection. Ladbrooks trainer Dean Taylor said it was a master drive by May.

"Those four at the start just took off and the pace was on. But he [May] knew they were going to ease and then thought we’d better get out and make the most of it," he said.

"Ricky said he asked him on the bend and he still had something there."

Taylor said Go Davey had  spelled nicely and had come back well in his four races in the past six weeks.  Co-owners Murray and June Dickson and David Anderson  had been involved with Go Davey right through, and Taylor said he was pleased to get the win for them. He had promised  them he would win them a country cup.
