Racing: Hounds get Friday meetings

The greyhounds code will have a regular Friday meeting under the calendar of dates released by the New Zealand Racing Board for the 2010-11 season.

The Friday meetings will have a noon start, while Wednesday evening greyhound meetings will shift to a noon start also.

"These changes were made in order to maximise export opportunities in Australia through Tabcorp, and will see virtually all meetings broadcast and wagered on in Australia," said NZRB general manager for racing Bill Colgan.

"This opportunity came about owing to the addition of two extra racing channels by Sky Australia in April."

New Zealand will host the Interdominion harness championships for the first time since 2005 in the new season, which starts on August 1. The pacing and trotting finals will be run on the evening of Saturday, April 9 at Addington in Christchurch, with heats run on the preceding two Fridays.

The calendar continues the pattern of holding race meetings on the seven days of the week to capitalise on domestic and international opportunities for wagering, while recognising the importance of key regional events, Colgan said.

"Our mandate is to optimise the proceeds of wagering to the benefit of the racing industry, which means we must have a commercial racing calendar that can extract maximum value from local and international punters," he said.

New Zealand racing is currently broadcast in Australia, the United States, France, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong at various times throughout the year.

"One of our strategic goals is to have the best-quality racing in the world, and this means we also need a calendar that enables trainers, horses and jockeys to campaign effectively.

"Finally, we need to balance these demands with the need for racing clubs to have dates that recognise the importance of racing in local communities."

After the Avondale Jockey Club's announcement that it will not race at its home track next season, the NZRB is working with NZ Thoroughbred Racing, Avondale and other northern region clubs to explore whether the club can race its key events at other venues next season.
