Racing: Judge fined over wrong placing

Tommy Thomson, judge at the Te Aroha meeting on Saturday, was fined $1500 after declaring the wrong third placing in a race.

Thomson placed Mallinson Road third in the fifth race, but advised stewards after reviewing the photo finish print that Sky Rocket was third and Mallinson Road was fourth.

There was a nose between them.

Dividends had already been declared so the connections of Sky Rocket had to be content with fourth placing.

Chief stipendiary steward Reid Sanders said Thomson had confused the noses of the two horses.

Sanders said he would consult with the TAB over compensation for bettors who supported Sky Rocket.

He said compensation would also be in order for the owners of Sky Rocket.
