Twenty-three teams from throughout the South Island took part in the Springston Trophy in Middlemarch at the weekend.

The South turned on a spectacular display of weather, with warm conditions on Friday afternoon contrasted by snow on Saturday and strong northwesterly winds on Sunday.

The Eyreton Pony Club blue team, from North Canterbury, won the overall trophy. Fairfield-based Saddleview won the horsemanship award.

Local teams' final placings were: Strath Taieri 7th, Mosgiel 9th, Saddleview 11th, Waikouaiti/Mosgiel combined 19th and West Taieri 23rd.
