Racing: Titsgittin sets his sights on Cup

Titsgittin enhanced his prospects for the $75,000 Riverton Cup with a resounding win in the Hororata Cup at Riccarton on Saturday.

Titsgittin mastered top weight of 60kg with ease, surging home from last in a 10-horse field at the 600m to win by two and a-half lengths.

The Hororata Cup was over 1800m, The Riverton Cup next Saturday is over 2147m.

Titsgittin is trained at Riccarton by Ross Beckett, who won the 2005 Riverton Cup with Hapuka Hero.

Beckett has been at Riccarton for six years after being based at Riverton.

"His form is hard to fault," Beckett said.

Titsgittin finished fourth in the Wellington Cup and third in the Marton Cup in recent starts.

Beckett is on crutches recovering from a pelvis injury he sustained in a fall from a horse two and a-half weeks ago.

He said the win was appropriate as he buys his feed of oats and chaff from the Seaton family who sponsored the Hororata Cup.

Jason Laking, who rode Titsgittin on Saturday, has the mount at Riverton.

It is the biggest weight carried to win a Hororata Cup since Royal Bid carried 9st 9lb (61.2kg) in 1965 when trained by Vic Clutterbuck and ridden by Frank Skelton.

Royal Bid, who won the New Zealand Cup the following year, carried 13.6kg above the minimum.

Titsgittin conceded his rivals a maximum of 7kg on Saturday.

It was the 11th win for Titsgittin from 38 starts and the $15,000 stake lifted his earnings to $203,875.

He is raced by Alan Brereton, of Christchurch with Ted Gentle, of Sydney and John Kelly, of Newcastle.

Brereton's wife, Vanessa, is in the Common Interest syndicate which races Miss Purrfection, winner of the race for 2 and 3yr-olds on Saturday.

Sharp Princess completed back-to-back wins in the listed South Island Breeders' Stakes for Wanganui jockey Lisa Allpress.

Allpress won the race last year on Gin Datre for trainer Craig Thornton.

Sharp Princess led throughout the 1600m and won by three and three-quarter lengths.

The 4yr-old Pins mare is trained at Wanganui by Fraser Auret for Bromley Bloodstock Ltd, which is operated by the Taupo-based John Bromley Auret has been training for four years following in the footsteps of his father, Nigel, who won the 2001 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes with Saint Cecile.

It was the first Riccarton win for Fraser on his second visit to the track.

Sharp Princess, a $170,000 purchase at a mixed bloodstock sale, is among several horses Auret trains for Bromley, who raced the top mare Princess Coup with Ray Coupland.
