Star mares’ trainer has no favourite

Trainer Stephen Marsh cannot split his star mares in  their clash in the Travis Stakes at Te Rapa tomorrow.

The Cambridge horseman saddles up Sofia Rosa and Thee Auld Floozie in the $100,000 group 2 event.

"The Travis looks a lovely race for my mares and I like them both," Marsh said.

"They will both be suited by the step up in distance."

Though the pair may be rated on similar lines by Marsh, his two gallopers go into the race with contrasting form lines.

Sofia Rosa’s form would be more familiar to Australian racing fans than to some of those attending tomorrow’s meeting. Her latest trip across the ditch was a hit-and-run mission that resulted in a fifth behind Our Ivanhowe in the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill.

Sofia then returned to New Zealand and produced a last-start fifth in the group 1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Te Rapa, which  she has improved from since.

"She has gone ahead since the Breeders’ Stakes and is right where we want her now."

Thee Auld Floozie has not had the jet-setting, transtasman season her stablemate has, but her form in New Zealand would suggest she could warrant lining up in good Australian company.

That was especially evident when the 5yr-old broke through at the top level with victory in the group 1 Thorndon Mile.

"She’s had a big campaign and we have had to peak her a few times," Marsh said.

"She has done an incredible job and kept fronting up."

The Travis will be her first run past 1600m since she finished fourth in last year’s running.

"She was unlucky last year.

"She got a long way back after being chopped out early and hit the line very well. It was an enormous run."

Thee Auld Floozie will also race in side winkers for the first time tomorrow.

"She’s become very laid-back and it might lift her a touch more at the end of her campaign," Marsh said.
