Maadi Cup 2020 cancelled

One of the biggest sporting events in the southern hemisphere has been suspended.

With limits imposed on public gatherings and about 2000 secondary school rowers expected to converge on Lake Ruataniwha at the end of the month for the Maadi Cup, something was going to have to give.

Rowing New Zealand announced the Maadi Cup event would be suspended because of Covid-19.

The virus is affecting the sporting landscape, and the Maadi Cup is just one of many events which now will not take place.

It is a shame for the rowers, many whom have been training for months for this, the climax of the season, but there was no other option for Rowing NZ.

The Maadi Cup alternates between Lake Karapiro in Waikato and Lake Ruataniwha, although it is unclear whether it will be held in Twizel next year.
