Silver, bronze complete meagre haul for NZ team

Rowing New Zealand received more than $5 million from High Performance Sport New Zealand this year and it has repaid that investment with just three medals at the world championships.

On the last day of competition in Plovdiv in Bulgaria, the New Zealand women's double sculls won silver while the men's double sculls claimed bronze.

That backs up the silver won in the women's pair on Saturday.

Overall, it is New Zealand's lowest medal return since 2003 and the first time since 2001 the team has failed to win gold at the championships.

Olivia Loe and Brooke Donoghue finished second in the women's double sculls behind Lithuania while the United States was third.

Lithuania was in the lead from the 1000m mark with Loe and Donoghue battling for second place with the US.

New Zealand's Chris Harris and John Storey were third the men's double sculls behind France which took gold after holding the lead from the start.

Switzerland finished just 0.3sec ahead of Harris and Storey.

Robbie Manson was never in the hunt in the single sculls and finished fifth after slipping off the pace after the halfway mark.

The women's eight won the B final while the men's eight finished third in the B final.

Hannah Osborne finished second in the B final of the women's single sculls.
