Rocking in the midfield

Steve Hepburn.
The All Blacks midfield was supposedly going to be the problem child this year but it now appears to be bubbling over with talent. Rugby writer Steve Hepburn looks at who the hit-makers are, who is rocketing up the charts and who is staying steady.

Malakai Fekitoa

Appeared to have the inside running and has done nothing wrong. Has some ball security issues and  maybe a tad too one-dimensional. Never got the ball in great positions thanks to those inside him. Brutal on defence.

Comparison: Kings of Leon — Early promise and supposed to have their time in the sun but for various reasons it has not happened — yet.

George Moala

A real crash and bash champion, Moala was the flat track bully against a Welsh side which had basically given up. Then got injured. Hard runner.

Comparison: Passenger — One-hit wonder although there is promise to come.

Seta Tamanivalu

Big and strong with the ball in hand. A real power player who knocks people over. But there is doubt around his ball handling and distribution skills. Black mark for heading to Crusaders.

Comparison: Rihanna — looks good, moves good, does the job well but is just unlikable.

Anton Lienert-Brown

A steady performance in the Chiefs midfield put his name up in lights and then made the most of injuries to others. Played very well in the chances which came along. But some have fallen head over heels on the limited releases.

Comparison: Lorde — A couple of good efforts but way too much praise for output so far.

Ryan Crotty

A guy who never looks flash and would not win a popularity contest among the fans. But just does his job, never makes mistakes and is deceptively strong with the ball in hand.

Comparison: Coldplay — Constantly mocked and rubbished but always comes back well, as someone out there likes them.

Sonny Bill Williams

The big cheese who was going to walk back into the black jersey. But a shanked Achilles heel at the Olympics has put him off the theatre and on the sidelines.

Comparison: Kanye West — Loves the headlines and not lacking in confidence of his own abilities although awards do speak for themselves.

Charlie Ngatai

Started off the year well and was scoring tries for fun. But then got one head knock too many and is out of the reckoning for this year at least. Played one test at this level.

Comparison: Rodriguez — a legend among his fans for his rock-blues but hardly ever seen in the big arenas.

Rieko Ioane

Looks the goods. Big, fast, skilful. It is hard not to like this guy. Not playing in the biggest of shows at the moment in front of empty stadiums.

Comparison: Brentwood Duo — All the rage and the superlatives flowing all on the back of what is very little. But there is some talent there.
