Assault charges had bearing on Frizell omission

Highlander Shannon Frizell has been left out of the All Blacks squad for the rest of the Rugby Championship, with coach Ian Foster saying his recent court case was a reason.

Frizell (27) was recently offered diversion on two charges of assaulting a woman and one of common assault relating to an incident at a Dunedin bar in May this year.

Coach Ian Foster yesterday named the 35-strong squad and confirmed that the loose forward's court case was a factor in him missing out.

"It's related to his visa access into Australia. He's still got aspects to work through regarding his court case - which we're really confident he will. In the meantime, he's got some things to do with that," Foster told RNZ.

Diversion is a series of prescribed tasks which, if completed successfully, would result in the charges against him being withdrawn and no convictions entered.

The scheme requires a defendant to admit responsibility and outside court in late July Frizell apologised for his behaviour, saying he had "put a plan in place with counsellors".

Frizell has 15 international caps to his name. He was disciplined by New Zealand Rugby at a misconduct hearing in late July and stood down for two matches.

Meanwhile, a captain has been chosen to replace Sam Whitelock, who is staying at home for the birth of a child, but Foster won't yet reveal who it is.

However, experienced hooker Codie Taylor is tipped to lead the side against Dave Rennie-coached Australia at Perth Stadium on September 5, Reuters reports.

Also not getting on the plane was first-choice first five-eighth Richie Mo’unga and Highlanders halfback Aaron Smith who are also expecting babies soon.

The experienced Smith, Whitelock and Mo'unga may join up with the squad for the rest of the Rugby Championship which will be played in Australia's northeastern Queensland state due to Covid-19 travel curbs. The squad arrived in Perth yesterday.

The All Blacks thrashed Australia 57-22 in the first round of the Rugby Championship at Auckland's Eden Park.

The win also kept the Bledisloe Cup, the annual trophy contested by the transtasman nations, in New Zealand hands for a 19th successive year.
