Kicking to fore in Valley’s 34-22 victory over Kurow

There were some high-scoring matches in North Otago club rugby over the weekend, victories going to Old Boys, Valley and Excelsior.

Valley beat Kurow 34-22, Old Boys beat Maheno 49-38, and Excelsior defeated Athletic Marist 29-19.

At Kurow on Thursday night, the boot of Valley halfback Owen Davey guided his side to victory.

A try to prop Jake Greenslade and two to Sam Sturgess gave Valley a 19-7 lead at halftime.

Robbie Richardson’s try was converted by Tyler Burgess, keeping the home side in contact as Valley pulled away in the second quarter.

Davey and Ben Payton added second-half tries for Valley and a Davey penalty took Valley out to a 34-7 before Kurow came back late, tries to Sam McDonald, Ben Fenwick and Tamela Samita reducing the final reducing the margin to Valley.

Under lights at Maheno on Friday night, Old Boys bolted out to a 21-0 lead against the home side after tries to Logan Wilson, Inoke Naufahu and Soni Tongotongo, which were all converted by Wilson.

Ralph Darling’s try extended Old Boys to a 28-5 lead early in the second spell and it then pulled away to a 49-17 lead before Maheno came back.

It produced tries from Adam Johnson, Hayden Tisdall and Brayden Skinner, with Robbie Smith adding three conversions, to reduce Old Boys’ winning margin to 11 points.

Excelsior defeated Athletic Marist 29-19 in a close encounter on Saturday.
