Barbarians honouring connection to Wyndham club

The Eastern-Northern Barbarians will tip their hat to their Wyndham connections on Saturday.

The combined country team was set up in 2012 to provide the Eastern and Northern sub-unions with a presence in Southland's premier club rugby competition.

It was also put in place to provide players from those parts of the province a chance to push for Stags selection while playing for a country team.

The team is based in Gore but has held home games at different clubs over recent seasons.

Tomorrow it will take its home game against defending Galbraith Shield champion Marist to Wyndham.

Barbarians players Rory McCall, Nathan Bee, Caleb Young, Rory van Vugt, and Willie Short are registered to the Wyndham club.

The Barbarians and Marist will clash at 3pm at Wyndham and Wyndham and Mossburn square-off in a big division one clash as the curtain-raiser, at 1.30pm.

Barbarians coach Sean Hurley said the Wyndham Rugby Club had been a good supporter of the Barbarians concept since its introduction and it was good to be able to take a home game there. The Barbarians are struggling for numbers at the moment, operating with as few as 17 players in one game this season.

Hurley said they battled to get their hands on any new players who come to the province to push for Stags selection, as those players tended to link with town clubs.

He felt for the Barbarians to continue to provide country rugby with a competitive premier team, it would hang on if it could get the buy-in from all the clubs in the area. A large number were on board, but not all, he said.

Hurley felt the key element was to have those clubs encouraging any promising players to test themselves at the premier level to further their development.

Lock Albert Qoro is one of the latest players to step up from the lower divisions and have a crack for the Barbarians and he is already impressing.

Qoro played for Pioneer last season and was also a Southland under-19 representative and he now looks at home in the premier ranks.

The Barbarians have won just one of four games to date this season but if they can remain untroubled by injury and their experienced forward pack takes charge, they should still be a playoff contender.

They will welcome back one of those experienced forwards, Brenton Howden, against Marist tomorrow.

Howden was shown a red card in the 22-18 loss to Star and was suspended for the losses to Blues and Woodlands over the past fortnight.

In other premier fixtures tomorrow, Pirates-Old Boys will host Star, while Woodlands and Blues will clash at Woodlands.

In other division one fixtures, Edendale will travel to Te Anau, Riversdale hosts Waikaka, and Waiau Star and Midlands will meet at Tuatapere.
