The business end of the season has arrived with a predictable look to tomorrow's semifinals.

Clutha left it late to clinch top spot on the competition ladder as it was chased all the way by a developing Crescent side.

Results-wise though, it was never in doubt that Clutha is going to be the team to beat.

The red and whites host Heriot in the first semifinal which will be a tight contest.

Heriot has improved since the start of the season, coming into its own in the second round.

It is playing with confidence and using size and physicality to its advantage.

Clutha is doing what needs to be done, week in week out, and is the favourite again to claim the competition for the fourth consecutive year.

In match-ups this season between the two sides, Heriot has come close to winning but Clutha has just got home.

The West Otago side lost to Clutha by only four points in round two and possibly could have won the game if its discipline been better.

Clutha's forwards will have to be up for a physical challenge while Heriot's backs will need to defend as a unit and not leave any holes against a dangerous Clutha side.

Crescent hosts Clutha Valley in the second semifinal. Crescent came very, very close two weeks ago when the teams drew.

Crescent has lost just the one game this season and has looked unbeatable at times.

Recent form might give Crescent some jitters, as it only just managed to beat Toko last weekend thanks to a last-minute try. It might have had an eye already on the playoffs.

Valley cemented its spot in the semifinals thanks to some solid performances on the whole.

Its backs have been arguably the best in the competition, boasting proven finishers and plenty of X-factor.

The forward battle should be an even contest if both packs wake up to the challenge.

Valley has injury worries and is missing key players from earlier on in the season which could be a major factor in the result. Crescent would have to go into the clash as favourite.

The bottom-four semifinals will both be close-run affairs. Toko hosts Lawrence and Clinton is at home to the fast-finishing Owaka.

There is still plenty to play for and Owaka will want to finish its 125th jubilee season on a high.
