Round one of the Southern region competition is complete and it has been one of the closest competitions in recent memory.

Any team is capable of beating another on its day and the second round is shaping up nicely.

Crescent sits on top of the table, two points ahead of defending champion Clutha.

Crescent locked away first-round honours and the coveted Springbok horns for the first time since 2006. Crescent lost only to Clutha in the first round and started to hit its straps at the back end of the round.

Clutha was beaten by Roxburgh two weeks ago and also dropped points against Toko when the sides drew in Milton. Owaka and Heriot are third and fourth respectively.

Owaka is five points behind Clutha with Heriot one point behind it.

Owaka has taken a huge step in the right direction this season with four wins and three losses. It has nine bonus points, more than any other side, and is playing with great confidence.

Heriot started well but had to play the other top three teams in consecutive weeks to end the round. The lack of bonus points for Heriot is keeping it in fourth.

Roxburgh is fifth, eight points behind Heriot. Roxburgh has shown that with its full-strength squad available it is very hard to beat, although its depth will be tested as the round wears on.

Toko has just the one win to its name but has given a decent account of itself most weeks. Toko sits 12 points off the pace but is more than capable of clawing the deficit back.

Clutha Valley is one point behind Toko and in a similar boat. The Valley side is more than capable of mounting a charge but cannot leave it too late.

Clinton will be buoyed by its Speight's Jug-winning effort against Roxburgh last weekend. It is on nine points and will need to win most second-round games to make the semifinals.

Five trophies are on the line in this weekend's matches as well as precious competition points.

Clutha hosts Clinton for the Helen Huddleston-George McKenzie Memorial Trophy and the McIntosh Cup. Clutha bounced back well last week and will look to continue its form against a team, which picked up its first win last weekend.

Crescent hosts Clutha Valley for the John Cross Cup. Crescent needs to keep winning with Clutha breathing down its neck.

It is club day at Owaka, as it hosts Toko for the Reg Phillip Trophy in a must-win game for both sides.

Roxburgh hosts Heriot for the West Otago Shield. A win for Heriot would open up a sizeable gap between the top four and the bottom four.

There will be no blowouts this round and any team is capable of winning on its day.
