Cromwell probably too strong for Arrowtown

The White Horse Cup game between Cromwell and Arrowtown should prove to be the highlight of the latest round of the Central Otago premier competition tomorrow.

Cromwell, which cemented third spot on the table after it knocked over the previously table-topping Wakatipu side 22-19 last week in an impressive display, should be too good for the fourth-placed Arrowtown side. Arrowtown had a good hit-out in preparation for this fixture, demolishing Clyde Earnscleugh 74-26 in a try fest last week. The game is to be played in Cromwell and will kick off at 1pm.

Clyde-Earnscleugh hosts Wakatipu at the Clyde Domain, getting under way at 1pm.

The home team will need to make its first tackles count against a Wakatipu side keen to bounce back from last weekend's defeat. The visitors will be hurting after losing their unbeaten record last week.

The Wakatipu side is still way out in front in points scored with 508 points, 118 more than the next best. The home side will be hard pressed to stop it from completing another victory.

Top-of-the-table Upper Clutha should continue on its winning way when it hosts Matakanui Combined at Wanaka in a game starting at 1pm.

This will be the first time these two play each other this season, as the first game between the two ended in the Omakau-based side defaulting due to lack of front rowers. The combined side appears to have rectified the problem and has shown plenty of grit and determination, but will be hard pressed to topple an Upper Clutha side on top of its game at present. The home side still boasts the best defensive record in the competition and should maintain its top-of-the-table position.

Maniototo will host Alexandra at Ranfurly, kicking off at 1.30pm, to round out the fixtures this weekend. The home side is still in with a sniff of the top four and should be too strong all round for an opposition that has struggled to get a full 80 minutes' effort under its belt this season.

Maniototo pushed the Upper Clutha side hard last weekend to eventually go down 21-10 and will take plenty of heart from that game. Alexandra will need to keep its concentration up for the entire game to be in with a chance.
