Dozen new players named in side to challenge Otago

Plenty of new blood has been named in the North Otago side to take on Otago in the Ranfurly Shield challenge in Oamaru on Friday.

A dozen new players have been selected in the squad.

Maheno lock Josh Hayward and Maheno openside flanker Marcus Balchin have made the starting side while Maheno first five-eighth Lachlan Kingan, Maheno centre Clement Gasca, Valley outside back Harold Packman, Athletic Marist fullback Pati Patrick and Athletic winger Andrew Fauoo come into the starting side.

Newcomers included in the forward reserves are Hayden Tisdall (Maheno), Michael Mata'afa (Maheno), Kelepi Funaki (Old Boys), Mat Duff (Excelsior) and Toni Taufa (Old Boys) while Anthony Arty (Athletic Marist) and Sam Tatupu (Maheno) have been named in the back reserves.

In the reserves as a player of origin is Alhambra-Union and former St Kevin's loose forward Jacob Coghlan while Green Island lock Woody Kirkwood - a loan player - will lock the scrum with Hayward.

There is experience in the pack in hooker Sam Sturgess and props Ralph Darling, who will captain the side, and Meli Kolinisau as well as blindside flanker Jake Greenslade and No8 Josh Clark.

Halfback Robbie Smith, who has 39 caps, and second five-eighth and match centurion Lemi Masoe will guide the backline, five of whom will be playing their first game at this level.

The match kicks off at 2.05pm.
