Heriot may struggle to contain lethal Clutha backs

After eight weeks of competition, the top three teams are pulling away from the rest.

There is an intense battle heating up for the fourth semifinal spot with every team still in the hunt.

Top-of-the-table Clutha heads to Heriot, which is sitting in fourth spot.

The weather may favour the home side if the snow flurries and winter conditions stay around.

Clutha prides itself on its back play and using plenty of width and depth, allowing its quick backs to run riot.

Heriot will want to take the initiative up front and starve Clutha of possession.

The Clutha backs are too lethal to keep giving possession to. The weather could play a part but Clutha should be too strong.

Second-placed Crescent hosts Clinton for the Ian Reid Memorial. Both had wins last weekend.

Crescent put 50 on Lawrence while Clinton beat Owaka by a try. Crescent should be too strong in this clash.

If Clinton is serious about taking fourth spot, then it needs to get points from these sorts of games.

Third-placed Clutha Valley heads down to Owaka. Valley is travelling nicely and has players coming into form.

Centre Jonny Sargent was a real key in Southern's close loss to Central on Monday at the Topp Cup.

He will be looking to carry his form forward.

Owaka has been unlucky not to take more points in the past few weeks.

The side has been playing some very decent rugby and just needs the rub of the green to go its way.

Owaka has injuries but this gives a chance to the fringe players to make a name in the game.

Toko hosts Lawrence and both teams are still in the hunt. Both teams were soundly beaten last week and another loss will dampen their semifinal chances.
