Defending champions Old Boys opened the North Otago club rugby season with a 47-17 win over Valley at Weston today.

Led by powerhouse forwards Kelepi Funaki and Unga Kefu, Old Boys scored seven tries and were always in control.

Kurow opened the season with a bang, thumping Excelsior 53-0 at Kurow.

There was a thriller in Oamaru, where Maheno held off Athletic Marist 38-37.
