The Southern Region competition comes to an end tomorrow and it is old foes Clutha and Crescent contesting the chocolates yet again.

It will be the third year in a row the bitter rivals have faced off in the final.

Clutha is gunning for its fifth Southern Region title in a row and has timed its run to perfection.

It has not been plain sailing for Clutha this season as it has been in previous years. The standard of the competition has risen through the roof and Clutha has been kept honest by most teams.

Including last weekend's semifinal shellacking of Heriot, Clutha has won 12 of 15 games which is still impressive. Its two losses came at the hands of Roxburgh and Heriot in the first and second rounds respectively.

Clutha also drew with Toko in week two of the competition. Clutha's forward pack has not been as dominant this season due to some notable absences, but it has held its own and set a platform.

Hooker Josh Turnbull has been a leader up front. With many experienced players missing for most of the season, Turnbull has put his hand up and has led by example.

Locks Todd Holgate and Scott Hollows have also been industrious in the tight.

The Clutha backs have been unstoppable again - they thrive in open space and, if given a centimetre, they will take 12km.

Wingers Robin Fesilafai (26 tries) and Sam Viliamu (13) have run amok.

Halfback Ollie Kenny and utility back Zak Thoms have also stepped up another level while Thoms' goal-kicking has been very impressive.

Crescent led the competition for most of the season and had only one loss until four weeks remaining, when it lost three of its last four matches.

Crescent has been gradually building and has had a fantastic ability of winning the close-fought battles.

Many cliches around the rugby world mention "playing for the full 80 minutes" - Crescent has done this for most of the season.

Last week's semifinal triumph over Owaka was a hard-fought battle which will have given Crescent a much-needed intensity check before such a big game.

Crescent's tight five has led the way and its depth in this position is unheralded. Props Logan Morrell, Lester Papali'i and Alan Anderson have all been standouts and hooker Brendan Irwin has also excelled.

Crescent has numerous locking combinations that have done the business

The 10 and 12 combination of Harley McHardy and Chase Owen has been pretty special.

Owen showed up from town early in the season and took over the pivot spot when McHardy was out injured.

These two bounce off each other and give their side a real purpose on attack. Crescent's outside backs have also been solid also.

It has another huge test this weekend and both sides have reasons they can win.

Clutha will go in as favourite due to form and overall ability, but Crescent is sick of being the little brother. Is this the year?
