Pirates notches good win over Baabaas

Southland's top six club teams are making sure the 2020 premier competition is an entertaining one.

After beating top dog Woodlands during the week, the Eastern Northern Barbarians were brought back to earth in their round four match on Saturday by Pirates Old Boys.

Pirates Old Boys beat the Barbarians 39-14 at the Gore Showgrounds.

Hawks co-coach Ben McHugh said it was a good win.

“We’re building quite nice. We’ve got some good battlers in the forwards and a bloody good backline. We are defending really well this season, and we were able to shut them down.”

The Hawks had three punters carving off 60m which demoralised the Barbarians.

First five-eighth Greg Dyer and left-footed midfielder Jaye Thompson were equally effective when running the ball which kept the Baabaas guessing.

Hooker Josh Harwood was man of the match and fellow youngster Josh Wilcox excelled in the loose alongside No8 Hayden Hagerty.

The Hawks were the fitter team and had the luxury of rotating their players that had been bruised in the midweek game.

The Hawks have benefited from having fitness trainer Jason Price with them this season. Before the pandemic, Price was in Japan, working with Steve Hansen’s Toyota team.

The Barbarians could not muster the same intensity they had brought to their win during the week. Utility forward Brenton Howden was the Barbarians go-to man on Saturday and outside backs Jordan Stuart and Rory van Vugt also played well.

Marist beat Blues 41-26 at Miller St.

Marist led 24-9 at halftime and was first to score after the break. Marist stretched the margin to 41-16 before Blues scored two tries in the last 15 minutes.

Woodlands had a comfortable 34-5 home win over Star.

Woodlands led 24-5 at halftime. Star was without loose forward Jordan Stewart this week.

Midlands is leading the Ack Soper Shield division one competition after earning an important 24-17 victory over Edendale in Winton.

Midlands led 12-7 at half time but Edendale regained the lead midway through the second half before Midlands scored 12 points in the final 15 minutes.

Riversdale upset Wyndham 24-13 after leading 19-13 at half time, while Te Anau beat Waikaka 20-10 in Te Anau.

In the division two, Gerald Dermody Shield Mossburn beat fellow title contender Tokanui 17-9 to sit on top of the table, ahead of Pioneer.
