Twenty-two tries were scored by the winning teams in the first round of Citizens Shield rugby last Saturday  and  only seven tries  by the three losing teams.  Valley was the only losing side to earn a bonus point, with four tries.

The attacking potential, especially of the winning sides, was manifested by their ability to create space backed up by enthusiastic support play, which was encouraging at this stage of the season. However, defensively, four Valley players and five Excelsior players were shown yellow cards and one player was red-carded after being twice yellow-carded.

At one stage Valley had 12 players on the paddock and Excelsior 13.

It is going to take a while to get used to the new standards but  players simply must do this and do it quickly.

Much  was  publicised before the competition began, regarding the national union’s approach to high tackles and  concussion.

The national union is just following on what has been laid down by  the world body. Put simply, players must realise that what was acceptable last season is not in 2017.

Referees must apply the law as they see it on the paddock and players and coaches make changes to tackling techniques.

The offload is part and parcel of today’s rugby but unless there is a two-pronged attack from coaches and referees, more radical controls may have to be introduced. An increase  in injuries would certainly accelerate parental opposition to the sport.

More than 20 years ago, when front-row injuries were commonplace, techniques were introduced to eliminate most front-row injuries. Is it time for the tackle technique to be placed under real scrutiny?

Failure to do so will see a further drop out of players.

This Saturday, round two of Citizens Shield rugby will be played. Two games will be on  grounds two and three at Whitestone stadium.

Excelsior will play Kurow on  No2  and Old Boys will meet Maheno on  No3,  while Valley will face Athletic Marist at Weston, all games kicking off at 3pm.

The No 1 ground will probably be in use next Saturday, with the old cricket block removed from the main ground.
